Café Kappeli Helsinki Reviews
Lovely cuppa Jun 20, 2016
Yes, it is a pricey joint, but they do deliver value for your euro. Grandly occupying a high profile space on Helsinki’s Esplanade, Café Kappeli seems to be a local landmark. Not only do they own a choice piece of real estate, the building is spacious, old and elegant. We popped in for breakfast (unfortunately ignorant our hotel offered a complimentary buffet, due to the outrageous prices we endured there for dinner the night before), and it turned out quite well.
I suppose the key element was unlimited coffee refills. This is a frequent point of annoyance both domestic and internationally – joe is so cheap to produce there should never be charges to replenish! We had already gained an appreciation for how expensive Helsinki was and the ability to lollygag without escalating a tab was a treat, indeed.
And Café Kappeli is a remarkably beautiful establishment to languish in. There are multiple seating sections inside, ours overlooking Market Square. There was great comfort plotting the day’s itinerary in beautiful settings when you could simply jump up and run over to the coffee urn for a refill! Ordering is cafeteria style, and the counter service was okay (i.e., polite, but with slight attitude). Thanks to the self-serve options, however, you are dismissed from further interaction after paying up. Once armed with your purchases and freed to enjoy the inviting environs, this is a comforting palace.
There is also a sizable deck outside and a small stage immediately in front of that. We noticed tons of folks enjoying drinks and meals on the deck as we walked by here frequently and it looked wonderful. Not once did we see anyone on stage, so no idea how frequent performances are, or whether they are musicians, magicians, jugglers, acrobats, actors or something else?
