Modern Soviet Feb 06, 2017
I accidentally found this place when I was looking for the ‘Soyuz – 1 Bistro’. My guidebook said it was down some stairs ‘underneath Southern Fried Chicken ’. Well so is this place and I think it is the better of the 2 food wise. Soviet-era ladies in lunchroom uniforms serve up really hearty and stodgy Soviet favourites for very little money. It has ‘modern’ décor and furniture, but it still true Soviet. Plenty of cabbage dishes, sausages, rice, prepared salads. Thankfully you don’t need to speak Tajik to get what you want. Just smile and point and the dish is handed to you to put on your tray. Straight over to the cashier and then find a table. Very good hot food for any budget.

I had a nice filling lunch. I selected sausages in peppers and onions, a meat dumpling and a filled (with beef and rice) cabbage dish. Served with some cheap Baltica beers and I was quite full. For a tray full of food with change from $5, what a bargain!

In Tajik it's name is: кахвахона ирам
