Café Cristal Hamburg Reviews
Awful bad service Jul 22, 2015
N53°32'46.00" E9°58'22.20" on the corner of Reimarusstraße and Ditmar-Koel-straße in de Spanish-Portuguese quarter near U-Bahn station Landungsbrücken, the youngest addition to this corner seemed like a good place to have lunch in May 2015.
After finishing the quiche with a Portuguese beer, settling the bill of 12 euros with a bankcard we were in for an ancient shock. Café Cristal refuses bankcards: only cash. In 2015, it is very unusual to come across someone who runs a business like it is still the 1960s. Nowadays many people are not carrying cash anymore. Cannot Café Crystal afford a 50-euro POS terminal or the extra fees? Does not want Café Cristal the taxman to know how much it is bringing in? Tax evasion? Financial insecurity? Bank trouble? If cash only payment happens in a shop you leave without the goods. In a restaurant, this is impossible.
Very routinely, they told us U-Bahn station Landungsbrücken has an ATM and we had to leave our ID card (ausweis). Clearly, we were not the first victims of their rude cash-only treatment. We walked to the U-Bahn station Landungsbrücken were the ATM was out of order. There was not any other ATM around, so we followed the U-Bahn U3 back into the city looking around U-Bahn station Baumwall for an ATM and finally found one at U-bahn station Rödingsmarkt in the HypoVereinsbank on Altenwallbrücke.
Back after more than a dreadful hour wandering through Hamburg, Café Cristal added insult after injury stating that the ATM at Landungsbrücken was very often out of order. Why did you point us unnecessarily in that direction? Protesting against their unacceptable ill-behaved treatment, they threw appallingly at us there was not any sign on the door accepting bankcards. Disgusted we left.
Cash only is going away. We live in a world of debit and credit cards, mobile payments, online banking, wire transfers and Bitcoin. Abysmal Café Cristal failed to understand completely the modern digital times in which its customers live, clinging to dreadful ancient believes of cash money only and soon becoming a horrible relic of the past. Stay away from this deeply disrespectful place.
