Alis Surfcamp Dec 16, 2012
As soon as we landed, our "civilian" clothes went directly into the bag, exchanged for shorts, shirt and flip flops... Friend of ours took us for a week in his favorite kite surfing spot in the world. We walked couple hundred meters out of the airport building and picked a taxi on the rebound. This trick will cost you 15$ instead of 35$ for regular fare to Cabarete.

Cabarete is some 25km away from airport and it is very touristy town. Number of resorts and nicer hotels line up the coast following little lagoons and beautiful sand beaches that are full of kite surfers preparing their wings for a flight.

Other name of the Cabarete Surf-camp is Alis Surfcamp and everyone knows owners and beautiful manager Elena. Hotel is located on the peninsula that spreads through the swamp/lagoon called Pro Cup. It is pretty large space with new building constantly popping around. When we were there, new four story wooden tower was being erected, and it looked really impressive. After some price arguing, we got into beautiful second floor of the Tarzan Building. We pay 40$ for room that fits three people, has great bathroom and shares excellent kitchen and spacious balcony with another room on the floor.

Every bed has its own mosquito net, and that is one thing that you definitely need. Place is very clean, but you must be aware that swamp is just a spit away and that swamp rats consider buildings in this area as their home. Learn to share it or leave… Colorful chairs are thrown around the deck, surprisingly comfortable and sometimes wet. That was our favorite place to hang out till mosquitoes don’t push us back in. Kitchen is well equipped with all kinds of plates, pots, glasses and silverware, large fridge and gas stow. Only issue is that you MUST clean all the dishes when using them, because rats leave things behind them that are not really hygienic…

Room has lots of windows, table, chair, large ceiling fan and enough light for all your needs. Bathroom was made to follow natural flow of the space, with ceramic tiles making specious shower area. There is lots of hot water and super clean towels are provided on request.

Best way to meet people staying here is to join community dinner around 8pm. Food is fair and usually you can get “special” that is made for everyone that prepaid for dinner, or you can choose dinner from the dishes listed on the black boards hanging from the roof.

They have variety of lodging, ranging from luxurious to shared bathroom almost dorms. There is also a pool on the property, but i am not interested in that kind of water when I have beautiful Caribbean sea close to me...

Warmly recommended
