If u want to travel by train in China, good luck! Because u will need it more than anything. Sometimes u get it easy, sometimes u never get to the train.
If u r in Beijing and u r about to buy a ticket or get any info, DONT ENTER THE STATION BUILDING! inside there are nothing u need. But also DONT STAY in one of the 45678 queues outside station. Stand in front of the station looking at it. On ur right side, oposide the Metro entrance - u will see separate door to the building (NOT THE maIn DOOR of the station) dont read any information in english at the side of the right entrance - they are useless. Enter the station there (again: on the right side - inside u will find many counters, one of them on ur right is the counter for foreigners, they speak english and this is ur only chance to get info or tickets. If u r traveling with the highspeed train towards Tianjing, dont even bother to the main station. Go straight to the south station (how - u have to find ur own way, no metro line going there, and buses - nobody knows where they are going. Maybe taxi?) So good luck. sometimes good ppl will help u. But dont count too much on it in Beijing. ;) Part of the Azja / Asia 2009 travel blog |

our train tickets. Over breakfast Natasha informed me that since they
would be paying for my meals I needed to pay them, this seemed
perfectly reasonable to me, however she wanted 200 dollars which seemed
like it would be enough to pay for all of us for the duration… Train tickets and embasies. |

first challenge was to find the place to buy the ticket: lonely planet mentions a special foreigner desk but of course that doesn't seem to exist anymore (according to my search and the security girl who redirected me affirmatively to the ticket hall) so i entered the ticket hall, was laughed at by the security guard upon asking "english?" and had to choose from around 70 ticket… buying a train ticket... |

…asleep.
Amazingly i managed to stay in bed until 11am and then after a cheap noodle lunch we headed to Tianamen square to look for the train ticketing office. We couldnt find it so went to the train station to buy tickets to Daqing in the north east. We were suprised to find we could get a train that took only 9 hours and was quite cheap actually.
Afterwards we decided we would… Tickets and train problems! |
