Butterfly garden Leidschendam Reviews
Winged colours Apr 17, 2008
On the border between Leidschendam and Voorschoten, both lovely villages in The Netherlands, you’ll find a butterfly garden; ‘Vlinders aan de vliet’. Actually, this garden is a greenhouse dedicated to butterflies, in which you can freely roam. They have recreated a little part of the rain forest, including little streams, bridges and a wooden hut. Among the tropical flowers and plants, fly the most beautiful butterflies of all sorts of species.
The management and workers in the greenhouse dedicate their time and energy to grow the rarest of species, which they don’t keep for themselves, but share with kindred spirits all over the world. Besides butterflies, this greenhouse also is home to a few tropical birds and a pair of otters. Inside, near the actual entrance of the garden, you’ll find an incubator, where all the pupa's (chrysalis) hang.
The layout of the paths provides ample photo opportunities. However, it takes all the time and patience in the world to capture some species on camera. Fortunately, the scattered feeding cups (recycled bottle caps) lure the butterflies to more open and visible spots.
The butterfly garden also has a small terrace (indoors) where you can have a drink or a little snack. Prices of both the food and the beverages are very decent, if not cheap. A cup of coffee or a soft drink is generously offered for only € 1 (about US$ 1.5). The entrance fee is just as reasonable (€ 7.50), there is discount for kids and groups.
