How to reach the main attractions by bus Sep 02, 2009
Taking the bus in Malaysia is very cheap and in Penang it was quite convenient (well, if you are not in a hurry). Anyway, there was no way I would drive there so I had no other choice :P

In Georgetown, you can catch all buses at Komtar (the biggest tower of the city) or at the ferry terminal. The tourist information gave me a paper with the places of interest and buses to take to reach them. This really helped me so I am sharing it with you on this review (and i will do my best to make it readable ^^). But it is still better to always ask the driver before going for the ride ;)

We changed buses here to go to the border and got stamped out of Thailand no problems. We then changed buses for a third time and went to get our Malaysian visa which again caused no problems and then started on the last leg of the journey… A very cramped day....

If she had any sense whatsoever she would have thought that bused usually have passengers and when they stop at bus stops these passengers usually get off on to the pavement. What an idiot. When we got to the beach we found out that they were happy the tsunami hit because their beach got a good… Beware the scooter!

we got there at 9:15am ready to board the 9 hour bus to penang, only to discover that there are only two buses a day. one at 9am, and the other at 8pm. kath and i, along with an english couple - fiona and chris - struggled to come to terms with the realisation that we had 11 hours stuck in a shitey town with very, very little to offer… kuala lumpur - penang

There seemed to be a good tourist friendly bus service on the island and I love buses so what did I do.  Of course I rented a car.  For a few years I have wanted to drive in Asia just to say I had done that task.  Drivers in Thailand do not seem to know any rules… So you think you can drive!

Of course not as much as buses but still they can be fun.  The ferry goes between the towns of Georgetown and Buttersworth the port city on the mainland.  You only have to pay for the ride on the ferry to the island and so you can ride free… Wandering around Georgetown
