Burtonport is a fabulous little port town nestled away in the north west of Ireland, in County Donegal. Burtonport is a traditional fising port where many fishermen catch, lobster, crab, crayfish as well as other 'stationary' shellfish like oysters, muscles, winkles and scallops.

Burtonport is also a gateway to some of the smaller islands of Ireland north west coars, Aran Island, Ruttland and Innisfree. Aran Island is the largest with about 800 people living on the island!

There are numerous shipwrecks around Burtonport and the north west coast, with remains from the Spanish Armada (sunk in around 1588) as well as many fishing and trade vessels.

Burtonport is a little of the beaten track but a lovely place to visit if you can manage the time!

I have a bit of an obsession with missing ferries so it didn't matter that we didn't catch the ferry until late afternoon, I wanted us on the road by 7am. I think Leann muttered at some time during the morning that I was worse than any tour director we ever had with "bags out by 6:30am".  I have to say though that it was a good ...
