Buried Village Vacation Guide

The Buried village is an interesting site created during the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886.

Fallout from the eruption buried the small village changing the lives of all its residents.

Several of the huts and buildings have been maintained so that visitors can experience the feel of earth and lava creeping half way up the outside of the walls.

Being a tourist attraction there is a charge to enter the Village but there is plenty to see and do apart from the archeological side of the site.
Feed trout, walk through native forest to see a 30 meter waterfall, and enjoy the tranquility of the area.

The village is found by taking Tarawera Road off State Highway 5 out of Rotorua. The road winds through the countryside past the beautiful Blue and Green Lakes for about 15 minutes. The village is at the end of Tarawera Road.
