Burau Bay Resort Hotel Langkawi Reviews
Great location, bad hotel Sep 18, 2008
The location of the mutiara Burau bay beach resort could not have been better. A vary nice strech of beach. There are off-resort dining facilities at a walking distance in the oriental village and particular at the harbour.
Two types of very very very domesticated monkeys can be found on resort grounds and your balcony :) which is great.
However... The cabana's are made of plastic. (For europeans: think Formula 1 hotels in cabana form) They are small. The bathroom ( a toilet, sink and shower, mainly made of plastic) is petite. Spider rags can be found on the ceiling. The whole cabana is in definite need of renovation. In the cabana the bed light was replaced and the new one could only be turned off by the main switch near the door (getting out of bed) or unscrewing the light bolb.
Note that "garden view" can also mean "cabana view" since there can be as many as five rows of cabana's, not leaving much of a view.
The seashell bar/restaurant is actually pretty good. Good food, only a bit more expensive then restaurants outside the resort.
The restaurant near the lobby is unpredictable. The breakfast can be either excellent or the crossants may be that dry that they can serve as lethal weapons.
Dinner can also be unpredictable. One night it took 10 minutes for dinner to arrive, but another night it took 30 minutes and for other guests over an hour to arrive. Not all staff can speak proper English so there is no communication on what is taking so long.
That not all staff members master the English language does also apply to the reception. In addition these staff members may be junior staff members that are on duty alone, resulting in frustration for the guests. If senior staff members are on duty, the service at the reception is resonable to good.
Security is lacking.

The Burau Bay Resort is set on possibly the nicest stretch of beach on the island, and the resort itself interesting for nature lovers ... with butterfly lizards (up to 2 feet long) running around the gardens disappearing into holes in the ground everwhere, and hornbills (rare bird) flying around, and chickens scratching for earthworms.
All accommodation is in modest cabanas set among the trees living up to the hotel tag line of "By the Bay, In the Forest". Very happy with our choice of hotel, but for a longer stay we'd probably recommend a property with access to local eating ... while food at our hotel wasn't expensive, a soft drink cost us MYR10 which is equivalent of three meals and two drinks in an air-conditioned shopping mall.
