Bunya Mountains is one of those rare gems which the locals know, and rarely share with the world. It's almost every Queensland family rite of camping passage and most Queenslanders have had a childhood experience in the Bunya Mountains. It has accommodation available from simple camping to B&Bs to self contained quaint holiday homes. The horse drawn carriage still rumbles through the township every day and you can handfeed native parrots and kangaroos. I would recommend booking a small cottage as the weather is cool. It snows once a decade during August! There are numours bushwalking treks for every fitness level and you can easily spend a whole week exploring the various routes. Pack everything you need, but there is a decent restaurant and pizza restaurant. Oh, a good tip is to fill up with petrol before ascending the mountain as there is no petrol available once inside the national park. I have been to Bunya Mountains at least a dozen times and never tire of it. It really is the best getaway destination.
