Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel Bandung Reviews
Art deco style hotel in Dago, Bandung Dec 28, 2009
Bumi Sawunggaling Hotel is located in the midst of Bandung’s leafy neighborhood of Dago. It is nearby the Bandung Institute of Technology and minutes away to Jalan Riau, a well-known strip of road lined with numerous factory outlets which gets especially crowded during the weekends.
The hotel is built like one of the old Dutch colonial houses yet still retain a homey atmosphere. I later learned from one of the staff at reception that the hotel was indeed built during the pre-Independence period in the 1920s and used to be home to a Dutch government official. It was then converted into a student dormitory for the nearby university and only functioned as a real, as in commercial, hotel for the past 10 years through some extensive renovations yet keeping the heritage intact.
The hotel is quite small comprising of three storeys (no elevators here) with around 20 rooms or so. The smallish yet charming reception is on the first floor (naturally..) along with the lounge, business center, restaurant/café and spa. Photos portraying old Bandung can be found in the lounge as well as along the staircase leading up to our rooms.
The room is average sized, clean, comfortable and had the usual amenities : cable TV, mini fridge, tea & coffee making set etc even some overpriced traditional snacks. The bathroom is small but relatively clean. Floors throughout the hotel, except the staircase were made of marble/granite (?) so not a lot of carpeting to gather dust or stain on.
Room rate included buffet breakfast for two and 21% tax & service charge (IDR 400,000 ≈ USD 40 for superior room). The buffet selection is pretty limited but I didn’t expect much so I took it for what it was. There were choices of toast, omelette and some Indonesian dishes. Coffee, tea and juices are also available. For those looking for other options, a couple of restaurants can be found within walking distance from the hotel most of which offer local dishes.
The hotel also has a nice spa with reasonable prices. As I only stayed for a night I did not obtain the full on experience but what came as a nice surprise is that a free 15-minute massage also comes with the room.
To sum it all up, the Bumi Sawunggaling is a no-frills hotel but still retains its character.
