Bukittinggi Vacation Guide
Bukittinggi, Indonesian for high hill, is one of big cities in West Sumatra, Indonesia. It is situated near Mount Singgalang and Mount Merapi. The land is hilly and the temperature is cool.
The landmark of the city is Jam Gadang or clock tower. Jam Gadang is the center of the activities. It is surounded by Plaza Bukittinggi, Pasar Atas, and Museum Bung Hatta.
Bukittinggi has famous tourism spots, such as Sianok Canyon (Ngarai Sianok) and Japanese Tunnel (Lobang Jepang). The location of Ngarai Sianok and Japanese Tunnel are next to each other. It is often said that Ngarai Sianok is Indonesian Grand Canyon.
Japanese Tunnel was constructed by the forced labor of Indonesians during Japanese occupation. This 1,470 meter long underground bunker is 40 meters below Ngarai Sianok. There are 21 tunnels previously used to store ammunition, used as residence rooms, meeting room, Romusha (forced labourer) dining room, kitchen, prison, hearing room, torture room, espionage room, ambush room, and escape gate.
