How to save money in Portugal Sep 13, 2010
Portugal is one of the few countries left in Europa that can be done on a budget, without seriously missing out on things.

There are however some tips you may want to keep in mind in case you want to cut back on spending.

1) A lot of cultural attractions in Portugal have no admission on a Sunday morning. This means that if you arrive at the ticket office of the attraction before noon, you get your entrance ticket for free. One of these attractions that charge no admission on a Sunday morning, is the Royal Palace of Mafra. Do keep in mind that there may be a bigger crowd at those times.

2) In Portugal it is considered normal to bring your selfmade sandwiches and eat them on a terrace of a restaurant. Especially Spanish people do this, they spread out their own picknic and only order a few cheap drinks.

If anyone should have just passed 60, consider leaving Portugal a few years and you can get half price on the (already cheap) railways.
Another possibility may be to share those huge meals between two.

I got to spend a few days on the southern Portugal coast in the December 'off-season'. It was still T-shirt weather, no tourists, and very inexpensive for Europe. Obrigado!
