Not your typical Chinese food joint Jul 07, 2008
Coming from LA, I love to visit trendy restaurants in new cities, which led to me to visit the Buddha Bar in NYC. As soon as you enter the place you feel as if you have left New York City. Golden Chinese statues along the walkway to the host booth decorate the entrance of the restaurant (beware of the last statue each side as the release incense smoke). The restaurant is dark and softly illuminated with red lights reminiscent of a Chinese opium den. Aquariums of jelly fish are found inside the eatery behind the sushi bar (the sushi bar is not available for seating).

The restaurant while Chinese in theme, offers both Chinese and Japanese fusion dishes. For appetizers we had hamachi sashimi (tuna sashimi) and a combination platter of calamari with shrimp. The hamachi was good, nothing to brag about, but the calamari and shrimp was very delicious. It is fried with lemon and pepper and there was no need to dip it in the dipping sauce provided. If you are into trying signature drinks have a sake-tini. You can't really taste the sake as it has slices of fresh ginger in the drink. As an entree I had the encrusted seared tuna. It was simply delicious!

The restaurant also has a lounge inside, great for having drinks after dinner. Access to the lounge is automatic if you have dinner. If you try just going to the lounge without having dinner, you better be ready to face the bouncer outside the restaurant.
