A cold January in Budapest is not the most boring in Europe. I had a great time and it is not the last time we meet, Buda, Pest and I.

Not much in Budapest this morning. I just had to get to my boat and buy a ticket, both of which occurred without any serious incident. Though, now that I remember, I tried to board the wrong boat. After getting stamped "out" of Hungary by customs, I went to a nice big beautiful boat, only to find that the boat I bought a ticket for was much smaller, and didn't have an outside deck to stand on (except for when we were in a lock).
After my initial disappointment, it wasn…

On our final day in Budapest, we spent a more lazy morning catching up on rest, before heading out for the day. On an earlier day we had gone to a wonderful coffee house, called Cafe Alibi, and I very much wanted to go back; so we returned there for a final visit.
We then headed out towards Varosliget, which is the city park. It's a little bit further out, but really, really worth a visit. Some of it isn't very fancy, but it's a lovely place to talk a long walk. …

15km from Budapest is the Statue Park, where the Communist statues that once stood in the city can now be seen.

Eight-years-old and sitting in my classroom waiting as the teacher gave out atlases. We were told to open them to the double-page spread showing Europe. I was mesmerized. All those peculiar countries with even stranger-sounding capital cities. Warsaw, Budapest, Bucharest and lots more besides filled the pages. And best of all was the thick black line that split the map right down the middle. Our teacher told us it was the Iron Curtain and it separated the communists from the rest of u…

Budapest, city on the banks of the Danube. Coming from the West the city has an eastern atmosphere, coming from the East the city has a western atmosphere.
We came from the east. And yes, the city had that western attitude, which was a bit of a disappointment, because we are used to that western attitude.
Nonetheless, Budapest is a beautiful city, and very big.....The river Danube here is already very wide, and fast flowing, and yet it still has a long way to go with lots of rivers add…

Very old train station, weird people everywhere and a monotone voice in a crazy language playing on the loud speakers. (I can't imagine the people needing all of that information.) I was walking around taking it all in and the I said "This place is like being in...Hungary" Upon leaving the train station the common question comes at you, "taxi" "taxi". Taxi, I don't even know were I want to go. As you leave the station, you try to assess your surroundings and …

Let me paint you a picture: imagine the Discoery Channel, one of those nature programs invariably featuring an oddly dressed Englishman quietly commenting on the migration patterns of wildebeast. Now zoom out and watch thousands of said beast in the midst of some migratory action, crossing a river say. Now imagine unwashed miscreants with backpacks, tents, shopping trolleys, skateboards, dogs, unicylcles and guitares; throw in the odd campervan, Beetle, bus, truck, crane and a portaloo man an…

The evening of the 27th in Budapest was fairly low key, after wandering up and down some streets during the day, Brian hit the sack for a power nap, while I updated my last travel blog. After that we headed to the basement of our creepy but cool courtyard style hotel (Note to Dylan-similar to Puebla). In the basement we were served a giant Hungarian feast which included duck leg, goose liver, pork chop, hungarian sausage, and potatoes, these folks know how to stop your heart in terms of calor…
