I was, we were, quite drunk last night as it was Wayne's great plan for us to get really smashed. Once again I was forced to drink and I really don't know why I am still keeping myself from killing off this dude and then be sober for the rest of my life. I am such a good person I could go on Oprah. Livia, the most unfortunate travbuddy local in Budapest, is also in the picture of our drooonkenness.Travbuddies, we all know that Wayne is an alcoholic, no one can argue with that (not even Oprah)…

The few hours we had before the cab came to take us to aiport, was relaxing once. Slept till 8.30am and took some time finish packing, had some breakfast and Patrick watched tv up until it was time to go. The cab was a few minutes early and we got to the aiport in about 30 mins. We were a little early to check in, so we grabbed a little something to eat just to kill some time. This airport is so small, so it wasn't much to do or see. After checking in, and passing thru security, we stopped…

So I had every intention of finally leaving Budapest last night, but after my failed attempt to get to Eger on Saturday because we didn't get up early enough, I decided to hold over another day so I could get there.  Plus, no one can leave this hostel.  I think the record is 6 failed attemps to leave.  I'm on about my third.  Anyway, Eger is about a two hour bus ride away, and it's a tiny town with a lot of wine cellars.  I mean, a lot, like 200!My German friend Anne …

A Saturday in Budapest

Next morning we took it realy easy - we were eating breakfast at the hotel very late. The breakfast could have been better but we survived. I went out shopping, and found some small souvenirs that we could bring home. At noon we took a sightseeing bus just to get a broader perspective on the city. The city is really beautiful and there is plenty to do in the city even on a Sunday.   We decided to get out of the bus at the Citadella Sétány, where the view over the city…

After a fantastic breakfast at the hotel we headed to Memento Park - see the review!  It was an interesting visit and it was nice to see the area between central Pest and the park which turned out to be about a 25 minute drive.  It was getting colder by the minute, the gloves that I brought from Spain aren't going to be enough for winter here and in Poland.  By the time we finished the visit it was snowing hard.  Since there wasn't anything to do at the park, I waited abou…

Kristoffer and I woke up and were more then ready for a day of travel. We had spent the night at my boyfriend to make it a shorter drive to the airport and having the luck of him driving us as well was pure luxury:) We got to the airport where we were to meet Liz and her nephew, Patrick. Since they hadn't arrived yet Kristoffer and I went inside the Taxfree to look around and buy some chewing gum...We met up with them shortly after that and walked thowards our gate:)  The flight was on…

Going to Budapest was my treat to my flatmate Adam for his birthday... and it was an excellent choice if I do say so myself. Armed with tips from the Hungarian lady who does my nails, we arrived the Saturday night of the first long weekend in May. Unfortunately flights aren't the cheapest to Budapest, but our hotel was moderately priced, exceptionally central and actually quite fabulous (the Danubius Hotel Astoria). We decided to hit the town on our first night there, and, although it was bu…

Hello dear readers, The time of writing is now 22.18 pm. In less than an hour my train will leave for Romania. So, if there are seats left, I will be in Romania tomorrow to continue my trip. Yes, I will continue my trip. As I wrote before I did not die. I´ve made some creative banktransfers with fellow dutch people here in Budapest. And now I have money. Yesterday in the evening I went out to see the city by night. As you can see on the pictures it´s beautifull. For now I stop wri…

Budapest was quite nice and the experience was made even nicer because I stayed in a great hostel and met a lot of great people. Budapest is actually two cities - the older Buda, located on one side of the river, is dominated by Castle Hill. Like the name suggests, it is a hill with a castle on it, surrounded by a few small streets lined with older architecture. Pest, located on the opposite side of the river, is flat and more "modern."I can't really weave a cohesive narrative right now, so I…

I added a couple of videos from our dinner. A sightseeing city tour of Budapest included HERO'S SQUARE, and only driving by House of Parliament and the Royal Palace. Hero's Square is next to City Park and in the center is Millennium Memorial. The statues are leaders of seven tribes that founded Hungary in the 9th century. There are also statues of important statesmen in Hungarian history surrounding the memorial in a semi-circular arcades. The Museum of Fine Arts and Palace of Art are be…

(A quick blog again today, as all this writing is interrupting my Olympic game viewing and my time in Slovenia!)Budapest is huge, with sooo many things to see. We have accepted the fact that we can't see everything we want to see here (had to skip Memento Park, for example. This is where the communist statues came to live after being pulled down from around the city). Today, our last day, we did have another good day of covering the city on foot and saw most of the remaining things from our "…

August 22nd • 23rd     So I left Transylvania behind and left Cluj to Budapest by bus and arrived in the capital of Hungary around 6 AM in Nepliget bus station. From here I had to go to the city center to the Ginkgo Hostel where I had my booking made for one night. While in the bus station, I learned I should have got some local currency before leaving home, just enough to buy a subway ticket. So after looking around for an exchange office I gave up and started asking people if…

We left from Dortmund early on Saturday and flew to Budapest where our friend picked us up! We took the bus to the subway station and drove to his flat share, where we got rid of our backpacks. Then we walked around the city and up to the castle for some sightseeing. Afterwards we walked to a huge market hall, where we drank our first welcome-beers and had a Hungarian meal (I don´t remember its name, but it was deep-fired bread with different add-ons…). After that we drove back to the apar…

The last day in Budapest, we spent at the Aquincum, Margaret Island and the House of Terror.  Having never heard of the Aquincum before, I was impressed and could see this really becoming a tourist attraction.  You can tell that is what they are trying to do by buidling a new entrance and a new museum.  The museum was very enjoyable and definitely worth your time if you make it to Aquincum.  I also enjoyed Margaret Island and can see why its called Budapest's playground.&n…
