Buccellato is a cake flavoured with raisins and anise. It is sold fresh and soft. The first written record about this cake dates back 1485.

Originally it was made in a ring shape. Its name derives from the latin “buccella” that means ”bite”.

Outside it is brown colored and shiny. This is due to the brushing of some sugar and egg.

It lasts for a long time. When it gets hard it can be dipped into wine or as Lucchese people do; cut into pieces, toasted and then spread with sugar and strawberrries.

I bought two loaves of buccellato at Giurlani' s. They were very good and cheap.
