Bruny Island Vacation Guide
Bruny Island is a picturesque island 35 minutes’ drive south of Hobart, then a 15 minute ferry ride from Kettering. It is about the size of Singapore, but with a population of only 640 people. It appears to be two separate islands but the neck, a narrow strip of land, bordered on both sides by water, joins North and South Islands connecting them together.
There are many walks on the island from a quick 5 minute beach walk all the up to the full day circuit of the Labillardiere Peninsula. While on your walk, you may come across echidna, wallabies, rabbits and an abundance of bird life. All 12 species of birds endemic to Tasmania Live on Bruny Island. Of an evening you can visit the Penguin rookery and see the little (fairy) penguins arriving home for the evening. Peak viewing times for the penguins are from September to February; the penguins breed in colonies along the Bruny Island coastline and nest in burrows in the ground.
