Browns is a very nice, mid market restaurant in Manchester. Housed in a glorious old building, it has a good menu with some lovely meat on it.

The surroundings are a definite selling point, and it is worth coming in for a drink even if you aren’t eating. I think it is the former Reform Club (that or a bank); but the bar has cosy booths, and the whole restaurant is full of grand features and chandeliers. There is a piano, with live music some nights.

The food was excellent, and the service was great. The main courses and desserts aim towards traditional British, with modern touches. I’m sure there were vegetarian options, but didn’t check. This is a great place to go for a treat. Three courses and wine came to £50 each.

I nipped in here with a friend on a Sunday afternoon shopping trip in the City Centre. It is a short walk from Piccaddilly Gardens.

Apparently it is popular with a younger set in the evenings, but during the day is more mixed.

I have to say, I was really impressed with my first visit. The interior is very beautiful; having once been one of the city's opulent banking halls, it boasts huge marble pillars, a very grand, ornate stuccoed ceiling, huge decorative windows and rich oak pannelling. The back-ground piano playing added to the general charm and ambiance of the surroundings.

Even the toilets are impressive - and you can tell a lot about an establishment from the standard of its facilities. Entry is via an oak pannelled staircase and when you get downstairs, the ladies area is huge and absolutely immaculate.

The bar staff are very professional, but friendly. Apart from the usual range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks, you can choose from signature and classic cocktails at £4:50.

I plan on trying the brasserie for dinner one evening soon and will do an update then.
