Jun 13, 2007 this is not really a city but more of a place - and an amazing place at that! Broken River Cave is a 362-meter-long cave in New Zealand on the South Island. If you take Arthur's Pass Road (a very scenic drive) it is about 40 km outside of Christchurch. I believe there is a small sign so hopefully you don't miss it. Where you see the river, walk down a hill and you end up in a beautiful dark cave! Make sure you have clothes that can get wet (especially shoes with good traction) and a flashlight or headlamp. Also take note that apparently it can be dangerous in the spring when it rains alot because the water rises.

If you have never done this type of thing before, you will be absolutely amazed. It seems few and far between that you can get such a thrill for free these days too! I went with a group of people on a whim and we all came out smiling and in shock (a good shock, of course) from the whole experience. Highly recommended!
