you get what you pay for! if you can afford a but more go to Pod Hotel! this is a bit downhill - its a hostel but basic things like locks being loose on doors and bad heating spoilt it!

Broadway Hotel and Hostel New York City May 21, 2011
Easy to find, close to metro station. Located in a nice, relatively quiet area with lots of cafes, restaurants (from Mexican to Hummus), fast foods and general goods stores. Walking distance to Columbia University and Times Square (a bit of a longer walk). The hostel is rather clean with decent bathrooms, although rooms are a bit small (but it is New York so it's understandable). Pleasant common area with TV, computers, coffee machine etc. It is also a hotel so they have a doorman/security which is nice and reassuring. You can also use their shuttle service to go to the airport. However, there are no washing machines, but there are a few launderettes close to the hotel.

Not very friendly and far from tourist areas Sep 23, 2010
This place is not very close to the touristy areas, so be aware of that before booking. It's a good 30 minute subway ride to Times Square and that part of town. Upper East is mostly residential. People mostly kept to themselves, which I thought was weird. The computer and living room areas are nice, but you only get wifi downstairs. The rooms are completely empty except for one bunk bed.

Good place to stay Sep 07, 2009
I stayed here for about 4 days and it was worth it. If your someone who just wants to enjoy New York this is a good hostel to stay at. We didn't live here, we just needed a place to sleep. The elevator is pretty small to fit luggage in and is quite slow, but it did the job. We shared a room co-ed, it had 6 beds in a small room, the floors were a bit cut up and bunk beds against the wall. The washrooms are in the hall, two on each floor I believe. There is paid internet area on the ground floor. Also a fridge and stool and table area. Also a lounge couch area with a tv. We used the elevator to go up and the stairs to go down. :) It's faster to just walk down and we were tired after walking all day so elevator it was. We met some great people in our room! A girl from Japan, a guy from California, two girls from Maryland, a couple from Holland. A variety of people with interesting stories. :) The hostel is a minute away from the subway. Though a bit up in Manhattan we didn't have a problem because the subway was right there. The area was safe and close to small stores and restaurants. The people at the front desk were friendly as well. This was my first major trip so I was all scared that people would steal our luggage, but we were fine, I overreacted, there are lockers though. We just kept our luggage under/beside the bunk bed. There was a sink and mirror in the room but since the bed was so close to it it was hard to get to it.

If hostel, it's decent for you, you have one on 20 street and 7/8 av for around $30/night/person. Just double-bed room available for little more $.

Thanks FR-ank : ) Although I've stayed in hostels in other countries, I have to admit I didn't even think of staying in a hostel in NYC. Great Idea! Thanks for answering my post!

This place wasn't as nice as I wanted it to be but, considering I was only there to sleep, it got the job done. The best thing is that I met a ton of new friends and we partied a lot. When I go back to NYC i will most def be staying in the same place, for $30 a night, you cant beat it.
