Broads Backpackers Lodge Lusaka Reviews
Good Hostel let down by staff Aug 04, 2014
At just £6 a night for a dorm bed, and located in the central but quiet suburb of Fairview, Broads Backpackers is an absolute bargain for the level of comfort and facilities available. Unfortunately, and yes I am bearing in mind this is Africa, the level of customer service is not great.
To accentuate the positives: dorm rooms are clean, well-maintained and spacious. Even better are the private rooms. I didn’t stay in them, but their comfort and level of luxury is plain to see from their balconied, log cabin-esque exterior, and they don’t cost all that much more than the dorms.
Where Broads really excels is in (a) the communal bathrooms, which are more spotless than you’d think possible in a Hostel environment, and (b) the bar/restaurants. There are three of these in total: an outdoor bar, an indoor restaurant and another outdoor area which feels like a bit of both, albeit without having an actual bar area. The ‘main’ bar has a lively atmosphere, with plenty of beverages available and a good variety of comfortable seating. The food is also pretty good and reasonably priced, with the BBQ that starts in the evenings being especially recommended.
So…the negatives. The reception seems to be manned erratically, and not at all once dusk falls. While the lady at reception was friendly, I found everyone else to be mumbly and incoherent. When you ask them pretty much anything it feels as though they begrudge you asking them to, you know, do their job. In fact, they sometimes went out of their way to make your stay uncomfortable: more than once, someone barged in to the dorm room in the early hours of the morning, flicked the lights on and made no effort to keep their voice down.
A shame, as this otherwise has got all the ingredients to be a very good place to stay.
