Broad Street Diner

1135 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA, USA
Broad Street Diner - Greek Salad with anchovies - we ate lunch at a Greek Restaurant on South Street and they were out of anchovies, so this satisfied my craving (and you will note the other place is not reviewed, lol!).
Broad Street Diner - My crock of French Onion Soup warmed me up and was delicious.
Broad Street Diner - Not many patrons on a frigid Sunday night, but gotta love the booths.
Broad Street Diner - A diner in downtown Philly...this is the good life!
Broad Street Diner - Broad indeed...there must have been over a hundred things to pick from!
Broad Street Diner - There is no mistaking this as anything besides a vintage roadside diner.

A broad menu for Broad Street Dec 10, 2017
A vintage diner in the heart of South Philadelphia is a good thing. There is no mistaking what you are in for just by glimpsing the restaurant’s exterior – the standard ‘shiny silver trailer’ of any respectable diner. Hopes are confirmed once inside, where seating options are either in a booth or at the counter in front of the grill.

The joint was predictably empty on a frigid Sunday night in Philly and we were quickly seated. I hate to stereotype, but our waitress was also par with expectations. Extremely friendly and ready to make suggestions, I think the only missing ingredient was that she was not chewing gum! After she presented us with menus it occurred to me that may have been the source of the diner’s name: the usual menu was almost as thick as a book and supplemented by a wide range of daily specials – broad indeed. Being a diner, there is comfort knowing you can order an omelet for dinner and no selection is limited to certain hours of the day.

To shake the chill I started with a bowl of their French onion soup. Excuse me, a ‘crock’ of onion soup as it was delightfully served in the traditional two-toned ceramic container. Quite good and warming, the soup was followed up with their Greek Salad. The driver of this selection was the fact that it was topped with anchovies and it did not disappoint.

Cannot ask for much beyond good food and good service at good prices. There is nothing exotic about the Broad Street Diner, but there is much to be said for traditional values and this joint hits the mark on that front.
