Bristol Culture Reviews
A city with a quietly diverse culture! Jun 20, 2011
Bristol has a massive amount of culture and I think it is overlooked when tourists come to visit the UK! Bristol itself was a finalist for the European capital of culture in 2008 (losing out to Liverpool). I think this reflects the cultural depth the city has!
There is a fantastic amount of Art in Bristol and many galleries to visit! The Royal Academy of the West of England features works by famous artists. The summer programme states that artists such as Damien Hirst and Jack Vettriano will be featured there (as of June 2011). As well as this big gallery, there are also a number of smaller galleries along the waterfront that sell works of local artists and sculptors.
As well as more refined art, Bristol has a big underground street art scene. Works by the street artist Banksy are dotted around all over Bristol and well worth seeing! The Stoke's Croft area has a great deal of street art and is a very unique area of Bristol. The people that live there are very keen to keep small local shops and keep the street art available to the public!
Music is also a big influence in Bristol. There are various venues around the city with music ranging from classical to indie. The Croft in Stoke's Croft, for example, has good nights of up and coming young local bands. Bristol is said to be the home of drum and bass and you can find a few clubs playing dance music of the harder variety.
There are also at least three theatres in the city including Bristol Old Vic, Hippodrome and Tobacco Factory. The Hippodrome has big acts such as Derren Brown but also plays big musicals. The other two tend to feature smaller plays ranging from Shakespeare to modern drama.
All in all, Bristol is a great place to go for culture of all kinds. There is a great deal to choose catering for all tastes and so I recommend to anyone the cultural aspect of Bristol.
