Brisas Guardalavaca Hotel Holguin Reviews
Solid Budget All Inclusive Resort. Dec 04, 2011
Stayed 7 nights here in early December. It's just under an hour's drive from Holguin airport. There are 5 floors of rooms in the main building, and also a group of 2-level "villas" to the west of the main building. Everything is either close to, or right on the beach.
We booked a standard ocean view room on the 4th floor. It was decently sized and certainly had an ocean view. From the balcony, the beach and water's edge was maybe 200m away - A fully unobstructed view of the ocean of about 170 degrees!!! Great view of the water, palm trees, main pool and outdoor stage/ music/ dance area. Colourful sun chairs and thached parisols surrounding a clean, blue pool outside. Swim up bar in central pool too. A kind of narrow white sand beach with lots of available chairs. Nearly free of seaweed and almost zero litter on the sand. The staff keep it very neat all around the property. Palm trees and hammocks along the beach too. The water was choppy most of the time during my stay, but was pretty warm and clean. Not the finest feeling sand underwater with a bit of salad floating and on the bottom. Really though the property is in a real nice tropical spot, right on the water.
The room was decent sized with a king size bed, but basic and spartan. The bed was springy and cheap feeling with thin coarse bedding but overall, it was all right. The same could be said for the chairs, both the 2 indoor and the 2 out on the balcony. A smooth, tile floor throuout the room and bathroom (dust bunnies under the bed). Mini fridge (that was a bit noisy) a flat screen TV with a few channels in many different languages. The maid came 6 of 7 days and we tipped at least 1 cuc every morning. We got towel art and a clean room every day. (Maybe because of this?)
It was very humid outside. The room had independant AC control, but unfortunately our AC was either on or off at different speeds of cold. Even set at 30 degrees centigrade, it worked the same as it set at 19. Regardless, the room stayed humid and damp even with the AC on. Opening the big sliding door to the ocean always brought in a nice breeze, so AC was handy, but not essential.
Everything in the bathroom worked fine, but it had a real Communist-bloc, harsh-flourescent feel to it. Fixtures were old, a little faded and grey but all worked well enough. We always had hot water and good pressure. I LIKE that! :) Good selection of toiletries provided too.
There were great facilities on-site: 2 pools - 1 main one with a 24-hour bar & snack bar. The main pool was great and not packed with people. Large buffet room off of the reception with a shop, bar, and a la carte restaurants in the main building too. The food was the most flavourful I've had in 3 trips to Cuba. That includes buffet AND a la carte restaurants! Always food available somewhere 24 hours, and it was more than passable. Sadly, the oceanview rooms get pounded by music every night until at least 11PM by whatever show, band, announcement, or loud dance number is being played at the time. Having the balcony door closed helped but didn't nearly mute the sound. If you want quiet, take the other side of the hotel or the villas. It's loud on the oceanview side.
The service was friendly and fast all the time. We tipped the server/bartender 1 cuc for every meal or round of drinks and had good service nearly every time. The staff were genuinely grateful for the tip. We felt secure the whole time too. Subtle security people were all around the property and on the beach too, day & night, so no peddlers other than some sanctioned crafts sellers stalls near the pool during the day. Bravo Brisas! You have to rent the locak and key to the in-room safe for 14cuc/ week.
The quality of the structures and finish is a little tired and dated-looking. Really, this is a 3 star hotel with a lot of good amenities - 2 lit tennis courts, fitness centre, 3 PC's with internet available at reception for 6 cuc per hour. Right next door to the Club Amigo and the Atlantico resorts. Not much else in the immediate area to get to on foot.
Like I said earlier, this resort is a 3 star resort, but that's no knock on it. If you can get it cheap, like we did, you can have a great time and enjoy a comfortable and affordable Cuban vacation on the beach!
