Brikettfabrik Louise Domsdorf Reviews
The power of steam Sep 11, 2011
LOUISE, Europe’s oldest briquette factory, was in operation from 1882 to 1991, and is a technical monument nowadays.
The factory is located in the woods close to the village of Domsdorf about 120km south of Berlin.
Visiting Louise is worthwhile especially if you’re keen on steam engines and all kinds of imposing inventions our ancestors made to produce briquettes out of raw brown coal.
Working conditions were extremely exhausting and dangerous! It’s absolutely hard to believe that this factory was still run until 20 years ago.
From March to November you can join guided tours every day from 10 o'clock in the morning to 3pm or 4pm. Those tours through the factory include lots of informative facts about Louise’s history, and the opportunity of experiencing how all those machines actually work. Please notice that you can only explore the factory site accompanied by a tour guide.
Apart from such a tour you can visit the on-site exhibition situated at a neat museum.
Experiencing Louise makes time travelling possible, and shows the harsh but nevertheless highly sophisticated roots of modern industry.
