Bridgend Overview

The town of Bridgend is situated roughly halfway between the two biggest cities of Wales, Cardiff and Swansea. It is also between the South Wales Valleys to the North and the coastal areas of the Vale of Glamorgan to the south, making it something of a 'hub' for transport to other, more popular areas.

Bridgend was once considered important enough as a strategic location to merit three castles being constructed in the area in the 12th century. These are Newcastle, overlooking the town centre; Coity, slightly further out from the town centre and the most intact; and Ogmore, located in the nearby village of Ogmore-by-Sea. The other notable historical landmark is the old stone bridge in the town centre, which dates from 1425.

Bridgend's other notable attraction is the McArthur Glen Designer Outlet, an out of town retail park located in the Sarn area of the town, and one of Wales' most popular shopping destinations.
