A pretty bridge Jul 22, 2007
This beautiful steel truss cantilever bridge opened in 1926 and had to be raised and extended when the Bonneville Dam was constructed in the late 1930s. It now is 1,856 feet long and spans the Columbia River between Cascade Locks, Oregon and the state of Washington, near the town of Stevenson about 40 miles east of Portland. The highway is called the Pacific Crest Trail, and is located just east of the Columbia Gorge where you can find many very tall waterfalls that are easy to see, including Multnomah Falls. There is a small crossing charge of about a dollar for cars. Revenues from the bridge pay for maintenance, painting, inspections, and bond repayment. This is one of those attractive bridges that tends to make you glad you took this route!
