Brewton Overview

Brewton, Alabama is located in the southern part of the state not far from the Florida border. It is the county seat of Escambia County and has a population of about 6000. As I explored the downtown area I met a few nice people and had a couple of good conversations. Here is the new courthouse which is across the street from the old courthouse. One thing I wanted to do but did not get the chance was to visit the Thomas E. McMillan Museum housed on the campus of the Jefferson Davis Community College.

The new Escambia County Courthouse was built in 1960. If you look at the new and old courthouses together it appears they tried to pay homage to the old courthouse when they built the new one. There is a small park across the street from the courthouse with a gazebo and a fountain. Thankfully, when they built the new courthouse in 1960, they did not tear down the old courthouse from 1901. It still stands across the street from the new one. Personally, I think it is prettier. The old courthouse was bought by one of the leading families that has lived in Escambia County for many years. It is now used as their personal home.

There are several other buildings of historic and architectural interest in town. Many of them are on US Highways 31 and 29. The business district at the intersection of US Highway 31 and Alabama Highway 3 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
