I noticed that there were no bar reviews for my little town o' Breckenridge, so I thought I'd ad a guide for how to drink on the cheap in this town. This information will only be relevant for the 07-08 ski season, as places often trade owners, or inflation creeps in, etc. Here is the rundown of the places I frequent, and of course this is not an inclusive list:
Napper Tandy's (formerly known as "Salt Creek" - The place to be on Tuesdays and Thursdays for cheap beer & wings. Pitchers of Natural Light sell for $3 and rail drinks sell for $2 during the 4-7pm Happy Hour. Also, baskets of wings (in 3 flavor varieties, Thai, BBQ and Buffalo) sell for 2 bones, and an order of potato skins goes for a mere dollar. The place will be sparse until about 5:30, when all the mountain employees start filing in, then it gets increasingly more crowded and more difficult to get the waitresses attention. I'm sure they do specials on other nights as well, such as during Monday Night Football, but I'm mainly a Tues/Thurs guy at the Creek. The Dredge - A semi-fancy restaurant downstairs and a good sized bar upstairs, you can always get a Miller High Life here for a buck. Pool table, Foosball, Darts, all the usual games. I have rarely seen it packed here, it's more a good place to go with people you actually want to chat with. River Mountain Lodge - A Hotel bar located at the base of Ski Hill Road, at RML you can always get yourself a pint of Bud, Amber Bock or Mic Ultra for $1.50. It has a good dart board and a fireplace that you can sit around and yap about how low your bar tab is going to be. Bubba is the bartender and he is one of the nicest guys in town. Not a crowded place, but a good place if you are actually looking to talk without yelling over loud music. Jake's Dive Bar - a true bar-goers bar, Jakes has $4 pitchers of Keystone Light on Saturday nights, which somehow is not an especially busy night. Jakes has Foosball, a dartboard which is set at the top of the stairway, so that you have to stop playing when someone comes into the room, and a pool table. The upstairs in darker than the downstairs and louder, so you can have your pick of bar experience there. Free popcorn is available. The Goldpan - right across the street (more or less) from Jake's, I haven't been to the Pan yet this season, so I'm not sure if specials have changed or not. I know that last year on Friday's one could get $2 shots of Jager, and some kind of cheap pitcher. This place gets loud and crowded on Fridays, one room has a dance floor and the other has some table games, pool table, foosball, and some hockey type game that rarely if ever works. The also have this hook-on-a-string game where you try to swing the hook onto a nail on the wall, which some people seem to obsess over. Other places to check out include The Brown, complete with its haunted bathrooms (most girls don't like to use the restroom alone in the place, as I guess it's only the ladies room that has a ghost problem) Rita's and Mi Casa Happy Hours for good Marg's, and tho this place isn't really a bar, I can't help but mention Windy City Pizza, a pizza place in the City Market Plaza that has a 4-6pm Happy Hour where their huge slices are only a buck fifty, and beers are half off, meaning you can get a Newcastle for $1.75, which makes me quite happy, especially after all those nights of Natural or Keystone Light and PBR. Breck can be cheap if you know where to go, and hopefully this guide is of some use to the non-wealty traveler. Enjoy! |
