Saudade
posted by:
Dec 28, 2006 - Apr 13, 2007
It’s two full days before my eventual departure from Florianopolis, having spent the past three life enhancing months and few weeks lamenting my eventual departure at this island paradise in Brazil, and I am having what my Brazilian friend, Mahgoo, would say is a “Saudade” moment.  I still haven’t placed the elusive definition, but I feel it’s a plethora of emotions, including melancholy, nostalgia, longing, and déjà vu wrapped up in one.  It’s a word that one internal...

Well I only have a couple of minutes at the moment. I met up with my friends on Thursday and we´ve been going non-stop ever since.  Carnival is such a blast.  We spent all day in the Ivette Sangalo block yesterday.  She is awesome.  Tonight we are in a camarote viewing this awesome Carnival from the best seat in Salvador.  Tomorrow eve is Daniela Mercury block, the most awesome axe singer on the planet. Will catch up with you all later.&nbs...

Day 5. A busy day in Manaus
posted by:
Jun 14, 2007 - Aug 14, 2007
Today we woke up at about 7 am in order to catch some glimpses of the Manaus ´porto fluviante´ in the morning. It was incredible, very busy and full of life. Cargos going onto and out of the ships, guys carrying massive amounts of fruits/vegetables on their heads, stinking sailors, old prostitutes, you could find it all there. We went to a banana fair where they only had bananas and nothing else on sale. Later we saw less of a specialized marketplace with all kinds of vegetables, fruit...

Fortaleza, Brazil -› -› ...
We decided that we would try to relax and rest as much as possible….so we did! We only went way from Fortaleza one day, we went to a paradisiacal place called Canoa Quebrada. But we had to book in advance two seats in a mini bus to go to this place since it was 200km way from Fortaleza.   After arriving to the small village we still needed to take a quick ride to the beach using a special car called Buggy (4 wheel traction convertible car). It took us 5 minutes and we were there…in...

Getting ready
posted by:
Jul 24, 2006 - Jul 27, 2006
We arrived home in the middle of the afternoon, and I didn't even see the road on the way back until we started going downhill. Just put the earphones on and fell asleep like a baby in the passenger's seat of the car, with my brother driving and mom and grams on the back. Then I bailed dinner to spend the night with some friends at a party. No drinking, thanks to my gum and the medicines I've been taking. At least the festive mood from the trip didn't cease when it was over. And we'll prob...

Settling in to Brazil
posted by:
Aug 23, 2006 - Aug 27, 2006
Mom and I ventured out into Sao Paulo proper.  We left Alphaville around 9:30am and rush hour was not quite over.  We are bumper to bumper, driving down the road with four lanes across.  Four lanes, translated from Portuguese to English means four separate lines painted on the road, with seven to eight cars wide going down those four lanes.  If you want to pass someone, you just politely toot your horn twice.  Unless of course you are a bus.  If you are bus, you ...

Sweaty Jungle City
posted by:
Mar 13, 2007 - Aug 06, 2007
We left Tabitinga on our boat on Saturday afternoon. Once you´ve been on one of these river boats one or two times, it kind of gets monotonous. The Amazon river is huge, really huge. When you think of the Amazon, one tends ot think of wild animals and snakes and pristine rainforest but it was not like this at all on the trip from Tabatinga to Manaus. This part of the Amazon is stomped on quite a bit. There are small towns scattered on the side of the river quite frequenty and oil refineries ...

Foz do Iguacu
posted by:
Apr 20, 2002 - Apr 17, 2007
Foz do Iguacu is one of the most beautiful places on earth. There are about 300 waterfalls along with beautiful flowers and exotic animals. The falls border Brazil & Argentina similar to how Niagara Falls border the US & Canada. We stayed in the hotel within the Brazilian park. They served breakfast on a patio looking out toward one of the biggest & most beautiful falls. Spectacular. The Brazilian park has some trails for viewing & pretty easy to maneuver. We took a guided tour in the ...

The Jungle

Manaus was our introduction to Brazil, and it was a budget-traveller's dream: huge steaming plates of food for next to nothing, bustling markets for buying fruit, vegetables, backpacks, hammocks - you name it, and even an ornate rubber-boom opera house.  It was here that we also launched our "jungle trek," a 7-day semi-wild camping trip up the Rio Negro.  We saw aggressive pink dolphins, really aggressive tarantulas, a deadly snake, a pack of wild boars, and a group of wanker monkey...

Porto Xavier and the Jesuit Missions
posted by:
Dec 06, 2007 - Aug 07, 2008
The decision to change what money I had and cut through Brazil to the Missiones province of Argentina proved to be a wise one as I never encountered a working ATM that functioned with my card during my few days in Brazil. I had also decided, after looking at my bank account that I didn´t have enough money to spend the time to travel up the Brazilian coast and see many of the things that I wanted to see, things are just too expensive in Brazil, especially transportation. I found this out righ...

hey all, greetings from Sao Paulo!  after a grueling flight from Salvador, (we departed at 2:50am and arrived at 6:30am with a one hour time change, and had NO sleep, with a cold airplane, but ample seating) we arrrived dead tired and slept the majority of our first day in Sao Paulo.  we were greeted by Sarah`s friend, Tiago, who kindly picked us up and had a room prepared for us with two beds.  wonderful...a real bed after 10 days in a hostel.  did i mention i slept on my ...
