We recently took a trip to Eastern Europe, and at the recommendation of a friend, we spent a day in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia.

Bratislava has beautiful architecture like Prague, but it hasn't been tapped by all the tourists. Because of this, it has a real clean, unspoiled feel to it.

It also has a very interesting mideival and Communist mixture. You can see old, beautiful buildings right next to worn-down, Communist-era buildings that have graffiti all over them.

Currently, the exchange rate works very much in the favor of Western tourists. You can get some really nice & beautiful things for comparatively very little.

It also seems to have an active night-life.

A word of caution, though: Unless you're in Centrum (the tourist part of town), you'll be hard-pressed to find people who speak English, even at the train station. And even those who do, don't speak it very well. Look for younger people; they will be more likely to speak English. We had a very difficult time communicating, but that was part of the adventure!

All-in-all, though, we thoroughly enjoyed our time in Bratislava, and we certainly plan to visit again. We highly recommend Bratislava!

Slovak people are some of the most friendliest I have known in all my travels. They currently enjoy a non communist society, but some of the older generation would prefer to return to those days as they struggle financially nowadays and dread entering into the Euro in 2009, beacause life will be even more expensive for them. They have the freedom to travel abroad nowadays, unlike the communist years, but they complain that they do not have the money to travel. About 7/10 people are working middle class and do not have the same views. The country also suffers a homeless problem. I am currently working and living in Slovakia en route to ALL other central and eastern european countries.. before continuing around the world..just taking one day at a time. I LOVE IT.
