Brac Reef Beach Resort Cayman Brac Reviews
Excellent dive destination and fantastic service Nov 12, 2012
If you sit out on one of the balconies at Brac Reef Resort, you'll look out over the resort pool, bar area, beach and further, the turquoise Caribbean sea. Coconut palms sway in a late October breeze -- not bad for hurricane season they say. Outside your other door a view of the tennis court, lagoon and beyond; Little Cayman island sits in the distance -- alluring white sandy beaches beckon from a boat ride away.
The sister islands, Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are all known for their world class diving and underwater topography. Sheer walls plummet to unseen depths laden with soft and hard corals, sponges and abundant marine creatures. Large sea animals like turtles, grouper, shark and barracuda highlight almost every dive and small invertebrate nudibranchs, crustaceans and tropical fin-fish are sprinkled everywhere. Top all of these ingredients off with 84 degree water and 80 - 100' visibility and you'll agree that this is a destination worth coming to. Even better if the resort you stay in has all the amenities and services available to make you feel like a VIP.
And that is the case with Brac Reef Resort. Originally built in 1984, the resort still has some of the issues that an older hotel built on the islands would have (such as thin walls allowing way too much neighborly noise) but underwent a remodel several years ago and now boasts well-appointed rooms and common areas. The service in the hotel is outstanding -- if you don't have your every need catered to with grace and good cheer, you must be doing something terribly different from the rest of the folks who stay here. Meals included in the package deal are well rounded, with an abundant variety of choices, and there's plenty to go around -- even for the big eaters out there who pile up their plates many times . . . Understandable when the carving station has prime rib, tri-tip, or roast pork loin as an evening offering! The array of fruits and vegetables are nothing short of amazing and you would never know that you were on a tiny island out in the Caribbean far from a fresh produce source or restaurant supply chain.
The dive shop is exceptionally organized and capable of handling the 40 room hotel at full capacity with ease. The 4 custom built dive boats are comfortable and roomy - even at their max capacity of 20 divers. These 42-26' boats are equipped with dual ladders to ascend, and with dual platform "seats" on the swim platform. The seats are designed for the diver to walk up with mask and fins in hand, have a seat, shrug into their BCD/Tank (placed behind them by the divemaster), and stand up to giant stride off of the boat. No more sloppy tank walks to the back of the boat -- no more clumsy, tank-wearing fin-donning! The dive shop also has a multitude of rinse bins and drying racks so that the diver doesn't have to do the daily "gear schlep" all the way to their room. The staff is, of course, at the center of the operation and it seemed like every staff member, divemaster and boat captain were the cream of the crop. Perky personalities, cheerfulness and expert local knowledge was par for the course and set Brac Reef diving over and above so many other resorts. There were no DM trainees, no quiet sullen boat captains, no confusion as to division of duties Everyone worked together efficiently, cheerfully and HARD.
It is worth mentioning that the divemaster style here is not controlling. You and your buddy are free to dive wherever you want as long as you stay within the set profile given at the briefing before every dive. This makes diving infinitely more enjoyable as those that want to meander off can do so, and those that want to follow the divemaster can!
The extra amenities that the resort offers are outstanding. Wireless internet throughout the resort and available in every room, kayaks, bicycles, tennis court and rackets, daily organized fun (like bingo, movies, BBQ), flat screen TV and more, serve to add to the overwhelming list of reasons to stay here.
And the diving? Nothing short of incredible. The locals seem to respect the marine park title and dutifully protect its inhabitants. Giant lobster, large grouper, snapper, trigger and parrot fish that would be scarce in an area that was hunted are bountiful here and crowd around divers in curiosity. One diver was seen gently stroking a large grouper which slowly swam away and immediately returned to her side apparently asking for more petting. Of course the Lionfish also grow to an enormous size despite efforts to eradicate them. On each dive the Divemaster carries a spear to shoot and kill them on sight, and the locals have been given permission to harvest Lionfish from within the marine park. (A local last night recounted the story of his recent catch -- an 18 incher!)
The underwater terrain remains as spectacular as the marine life. Sheer drop walls form a backdrop for a diver to look out into the blue vast sea to spot pelagic wildlife cruising by. Shallower dives afford numerous opportunities for swim-throughs and valleys to explore. Fingers of coral formations that rise from the sand are havens for juveniles of all sorts while rays, jaw fish and conch reside in the sand below.
Cayman Brac also boasts 60' cliffs that are alluring to rock climbers, nature lovers and hikers. There are historical sites that date back to the days when pirates hid their loot, and shallow caves to explore. What the island lacks, however, is probably the main reason to come . . . no hustle and bustle of crowded metropolis, no traffic, no lines to wait in, and not much to do except dive, dive, and dive some more.
