Bowdoinham is a teensy village nestled along the banks of Merrymeeting Bay in Maine. There really is no reason to visit unless you have some need to realize that small towns whose economy is based upon small farms can continue to persist. If you do care to investigate, you will be rewarded by a rich history and unrequited friendship.
The history here is long – incorporated back in 1762, Bowdoinham was an early ship-building center. Ideally located along the confluence of several rivers which drain Maine, Bowdoinham was the birthplace of about 250 sea-going vessels. But the advent of steel ships doomed that industry and the town’s peak population was witnessed in 1850 at around 2,400 folks. But the locals were resilient and reverted to their roots, literally, harvesting apples, and potatoes to persist.
This is not a town that attracts any tourists…but abounds in natural beauty and opportunities for kayaking upon Merrymeeting Bay and exploring nature…
