Bourtzi, an island fortress Dec 02, 2012
The island fortress of bourtzi is located in the argolic gulf, and just about half a kilometer away from the beautiful seaside town of nafplio.
the island fortress is around 120 meters in length and 0.4 hectare in size. It was constructed as a fortification from the invaders (pirates) and was completed 1473. It was also used as an execution site for the prisoners of the palamidi castle located in mainland napflio.
it is very cheap to go here - around 2.50 euros (roundtrip) with a small boat that could fit around 10 people and would wait for 40 minutes for the tourists to see the surroundings of the fortress before heading back to the port.
as the fortress hadnt been used for a century, wild vegetation slowly creeps inside it but still completely clean. Atop the fortress, the beautiful promenade of nafplio could be seen, as well as the palamidi castle built on top of a mountain towering over the surroundings. At night, it is beautifully lighted that adds drama to the architecture as well.
i highly recommend visiting the island fortress of bourtzi, it is a must see if you are touring over the small town of naflio.
