Bounty Yatra Cochin Reviews
Great Kerala hostel for budget travelers Jul 25, 2011
Bounty Yatra in Kerala, India (modestly called "God's own country" by the locals, and not without reason) was my favorite of all the hostels I stayed in around India. It's located in Fort Cochin an easy walk away from the "downtown" area of stores, restaurants, and historic attractions. The multi-story building is cool because it's made entirely of stone - important in scorching southern India where even in December temperatures were in the mid 30s! Our room was clean and spacious with an attached bathroom and a hanging mosquito net over the large bed.
The staff was very accomodating given we arrived several days after we were due to get there because we got stranded in Goa after failing to get on our train to Kerala. One of the managers came out to pick us up from the airport in a giant and very comfortable car, going so far as to wait several hours for us when our flight was delayed. His thoughtfulness was a constant throughout our stay - one day my boyfriend asked if there was bread he could buy from the kitchen to make sandwiches in our room, and the manager popped out with his bike to a bakery nearby and brought back a loaf of bread for us. He and the other staff were also always helpful in suggesting places to go to eat, get anything we needed, or tour.
The best part of Kerala, in my opinion, are the beautiful waterways you can (and should!) take boat tours on. If you stay at Bounty Yatra you can arrange a single or multi-day tour through the hostel, though my group already arranged ours with an agency in town before we realized we could have done it there. Also, for those of you travelers that like to drink a cold beer when it's hot out, you should know that many restaurants in Kerala don't serve alcohol, and bars are only open until 10 or 11. Lucky for you, and us, at Bounty Yatra you can also buy beer from them as long as you catch them before they go to bed. Don't think that this is a party hostel, though - it was nice and quiet for our few days there, which is what we were looking for. All in all, I highly recommend this place for anyone staying in Fort Cochin!
