Bouganvillea Bed and Breakfast Ocean View Reviews
Past its Prime Apr 14, 2010
We were spending a couple days on the Big Island, arriving in Kona, driving around the southern part to Hilo. We wanted a place to stay halfway between the two cities, and the Bouganvillea B & B was the only option.
We really didn't know what we were getting into. This place was out in the middle of nowhere. After TJ got us checked in, we retreated to our rooms; Judy and me in one, TJ in another, with the hostess Martie. She explained to us a few rules of the B&B: 1 - please remove shoes while inside, according to Hawaiian custom (not a problem), 2 - please take a shower, but be brief (apparently they are dependent upon rainwater) and 3 - the dog is friendly, and the cat knows how to open the door to Room #3, his favorite (WHAT??? I'm glad that was TJ's room and not mine!). The rooms were comfortable, but certainly dated. They were SUPER clean, though. The appliances starting to show age (i.e. the VCR in the bedroom). Bouganvillea was probably a grand place to stay 15 years ago, but as the proprietors are aging, so is their B&B. Sweet, friendly people that I think are not wanting to admit their age.
Being a B&B, breakfast was served and we ate with Martie and Don on the lanai. The meal was absolutely incredible. She'd made this superb hash, served with fresh papaya and blueberries. That was the most amazing meal. We sat there, enjoying a leisurely meal and chatting for two hours with Martie and Don. I think we could have sat there all day, if we hadn't had the rest of the island to see.
All in all, this was certainly an interesting experience.
