Luxuary Tents in a wanna be "game reserve" Aug 22, 2012
During April of 2012 I went to a wedding in Mossel Bay, South Africa. The wedding was held at the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. Being part of the Garden Route in the Western Cape the scenery is absolutely breath-taking.

The reserve is quite nice, wonderful luxury tents, no cars are allowed beyond the safe parking area, and the friendly personnel drive you around in golf cars from point A-B if you don’t feel like, or are able to walk long distances. They have a restaurant, boma, splash pool and river.

I spend 2 nights, which was quite expensive, so I was hoping to get value for money. I only decided later to stay an extra night, so I had to move to a new tent on the second day. I LOVED the beds and the linen, had a wonderful nap and I actually could not wait to go to bed at night!!! Since I was able to sleep in 2 tents, I was very disappointed to see the second shower was even worst then the first one. Almost non-existing water pressure, taps didn’t work properly and no hot water. The a/c in tent 1 was working perfectly; the one in tent 2 didn’t work at all. The facilities in the room were adequate, coffee and tea making facilities, as well as a mini bar. No TV, but who needs (or want) one in this environment?

The food and drinks were great, huge variety to choose from during breakfast, they have a nice light lunch menu and the dinner buffet also offers a huge selection of meat, veg and starches.

What I didn’t like about the whole set-up was that they call themselves a “private game reserve”. It’s not a game reserve, it’s a very large zoo with very little to offer. They have a few Wildebeest, 2 White Rhinos, 4 giraffes, a couple of antelope, 3 elephants and 3 lions. You can go on an elephant back ride for about £60.

The Lions are kept separately in a very small space. These lions were part of a “walking with lions” project, but when they got older they became a danger to humans and were sold to this reserve. There are many more reserves like these, but it feels SO wrong to see the lions in a small enclosed area. I think what worried me most was that the lions still associate with humans, and now they don’t know where they belong, the game rangers are very aggressive in the process to keep the lions at a safe distance from the vehicles as they were used with interacting with humans, which in MY opinion is not fair to the animals.

The one amazing thing the owner, Dr. Dirk Neethling did, was to start a breeding program for the Black Impala, which was almost extinct a couple of years ago. Now after 10 years after an intensive program and lots of patience more than 100 Black Impalas roam the hills of Botlierskop.

The personnel were very friendly; but our ranger who took us on the game drive needs a bit more training and experience. Since we had people from the UK on the “game” drive, the ranger had to speak English instead of his native language Afrikaans, the English grammar was shocking and he could not even pronounce the names some of the animals in English. NO Dr. Neethling, if you want to have a Luxury Private Game Reserve and ask £50.00 per person for a 2 hour game drive, at least make sure the rangers are able to communicate with the paying customers…

It was an enjoyable weekend, but I think like in most cases it’s the people who make the party, not the place or amount of money spent.

Will I go again, NO, and I will make sure not to visit any place similar. Unfortunately South Africa is full of tourist traps, this is one of them. They think people are so desperate to see wild life, but to have a few acres of land available with a few animals, does not qualify them to be called game reserves. I think they see this as a money making opportunity and people fall for this, I did. I’d prefer to spend extra time and money, visit a “real game reserve” like Kruger National Park, where the animals still have the freedom to roam the more than 19 000km².
