Boston University Academy Lijiang Reviews

Only if you have to. Sep 12, 2010
We stayed for two nights. Our room was small and very noisy (from the room we could even hear the brushing when people brushed their teeth in the public bathroom not to mention when they were talking)

Mama (the hotel manager) is often very loud, very nervous, commands everyone around (including the customers) and doesn't listen to what you ask (or what her staff says) if the sentence has more than 3 words (very annoying!).

We would recommend trying your luck at an other hostel.

Let Ma Ma mother and feed you at this fab 'n' friendly guest house. Apr 23, 2009
Ma Ma Naxi’s Guest House is situated within the ‘Ancient’ or ‘Old Town’ of Lijiang and is easily one of the finest guest houses I have stayed in in 8 and a half months on The Road. It is run with friendship, generosity, humour and efficiency by the charismatic matriarch referred to only as ‘Ma Ma’ and her mostly female minions. Make no mistake, this is a powerhouse female operation. There is no stone left unturned by Ma Ma and her friendly niece Xiao Zhao in pursuing your comfort and convenience. Ba Ba Naxi (Ma Ma’s husband) also drifts around the compound of dorms and rooms, smiling and laughing and doing the occasional taxi run but is generally happy to live in the shadows of his formidably successful wife.

Super clean and nice dorm beds here can be had for 15-20RMB ($2-3 with rooms of 3 - 10 beds) and private rooms are also available at Guest House No.3 (or her other two slightly more private and expensive operations Guest House No.1 and No.2) for 50RMB ($7) . There is free internet and WiFi, travel & other guest house info, more free green tea than you can possibly fit in your body and randomly Ma Ma will often foist spare bananas and coffee upon you. Washing facilities are available and the showers/ squat toilets whilst simple are again clean & serviceable with hot water.

Between Ma Ma and Xiao Zhao almost anything you wish to do in Lijiang, Yunnan or even Greater China I suspect can be arranged with a brief conversation and a couple of phone calls. Planes, buses, trains. Whatever you need. Many people carry on from Lijiang to trek The Tiger Leaping Gorge and the gals ferry off happy trekkers every morning on a mini-van at 8.30am for a piddling 20RMB ($3).

Undoubtedly the highlight of the stay at Ma Ma’s though is the food! Super cheap and utterly incredible. Every night of the week guests can gather around tables in the communal area to prepare for an absolute feast prepared by Ma Ma and her minions. For the unbelievable 15RMB ($2) you will be subject to the biggest, cheapest and most delicious feast I suspect possibly of your whole time in China. Certainly the very best food I have had for any money so far! Even with 8 of you around a table, chop-sticks a’blazing the varied, richly flavoursome and beautiful dishes just keep on coming and coming until you are happy and ready to explode. It’s quite fantastic. Likewise breakfasts from the menu are of often huge portions and occasionally literally works of art in the way they are prepared and presented.

If you come to Lijiang you should really, really stay here and here only. Let Ma Ma mother you. She’ll give you Chinese medicine if you’re ill. Don’t ask, just take. She’ll give you lucky charms when you leave or go off trekking. Don’t take them off. She’ll hug you and hug you again. Just go with the flow. Don’t worry if you don’t understand her with her 10,000 decibel dialect of “Ma Ma this…” and “Ma Ma that…” and “Ma Ma say…” sounding almost more like he head of some Sicilian Mafioso Family than the Chinese lass she is. It’s hilarious. Just remember. Eat the food. Eat some more. Don’t be rude. Drink some tea. Drink some more. Ma Ma rules. Xiao Zhao will have your money quicker than a London Victorian pick-pocketing urchin ( “Give me money!” ) but she probably loves ya and always means well. It’s just her job. Smile at Ba Ba. Obey Ma Ma. Enjoy and relax.

[P.s. if you wish to extend your Chinese visa in Lijiang it is an easy place to do it but MAKE SURE you get Ma Ma Naxi Guest House to register your presence online at the guest house first! The police need to check this. The PSB office is 15 mins walk away, open 8.30am - 11.30am and 14.00- 17.30pm. 160RMB, your passport and 1 passport photo required. Process takes 20 mins]

It is really a great review and has so much detail. I think this type of information is the essence of a travel site.... so much better than a travel book!

Thanks Sylvia... yeah, I was holdin' out hopes for this one to maybe get a sneaky 'Feature' and put an even bigger grin than usual on Ma Ma's face whilst I was there but it wasn't to be "sniff sniff" ;D
