See Boston the way it was meant to be seen - on foot or boat May 13, 2012
Boston is most certainly a walking city – both for fun and for getting things done. There’s plenty of amazing history and stunning architecture (okay, maybe not City Hall unless you really, really like Brutalism/the Brutalist style) within the city just waiting to be discovered. One tour company I’ve had great experience with is Boston By Foot.

The tours are all led by enthusiastic volunteer guides who both work and quite often live in the neighborhoods they tour, which often gives the tour a personal touch. So far I’ve taken the “Beacon Hill” and “Victorian Back Bay” tours and each time I came away with a little something new to add to my knowledge of my new home town. (Yes, I’m taking these tours as a resident! I think walking tours are a great way to learn where things are and to get into areas of the city I might not otherwise see.)

Boston By Foot covers the big historical highlights in the Freedom Trail, including a special tour designed for children, and the North End tours among others. They also take on literary greats and architecture in their regularly offered “Classic” tours. Special tours are available each month, during Harborfest (Boston’s week long 4th of July celebration), and around various holidays. New for Summer 2012 are boat tours that appear to focus on architecture.

The primary tour season is May-October with special tours during the off-season. Most tours last about 1.5 hours. Prices for the walking tours vary somewhat by tour, though most cost around $12 for adults and $8 for children 6-12. Boat tours are $25 for adults and $20 for children and seniors.
