I've had the incredible fortune to go visiting Bosnia and a small part of Serbia. I took part in a special proget in which i had to sleep in an elementary school and to use only old bikes (taken from Italy) to move in the city (Sarajevo) and even out of it. we did lot of kilometres under the sun or under the heavy rain, during the day or during the night in order to visit some churches , some places that where important during the war and to speak with people who have done o...

Arrived at Sarajevo Airport after 4 flights from the UK. Tierd.. Got a taxi and headed towards the holiday Inn. (see review). I just loved the place, the people, the culture. Met two of my friends from Sarajevo the first morning and we headed into town. Alot of the damage during the war has been renovated, although some still evident. I only had 3 days so limited my trip to sarajevo itself. Iam planning to go back to bosnia at the end of the year. I even managed to speak som...

The JAT Airways turboprop from Belgrade to Sarajevo took only forty minutes, even if it did sound like a Lancaster Bomber. “Why are you going to Bosnia?” someone had asked me back in the UK. “And please don’t tell me you’re going there on holiday.” Well that was exactly what we were doing. In the arrivals hall of Sarajevo Airport, Michael and I got some local currency (the Convertible Mark) and caught a taxi to our hotel, the Holiday Inn.

Mostar is a town about 4 hours by bus from Split and was our first stop in Bosnia and Hercigovina. Mostar is famous for its old bridge that was destroyed during the war with Croatia in the 1990s. The bridge has since been rebuilt and is now a symbol of the rebuilding process post war, not only of Bosnia, but also of the relations with the Croatians. Driving into the town the devastation caused by the war is still clearly visible. The rebuilding of the town has been significant as alm...

Mostar by the river Neretva is over 500 years old. Parts of the town has been rebuild after the war 1991 - 95. Wherever you go in Mostar you can see scars after this war, but the town is rising form the ruins. Stari Most - The Old Bridge (build in 1566), is rebuild, the old stones are brought up from Neretva and jused. Summer 2004 the bridge was reopened. The old city was in 2005 placed on UNESCO`s trust.

I was absolutely struggling with the concept of leaving Dubrovnik.I needed to start heading North to get to Milan for my return flight.Getting reluctantly to the bus station on my last evening I'd missed all the buses heading North except for one going into Bosnia-Hercegovina to the small town of Mostar, so my decision was easy. And a great decision it was! I got there late and it was freezing and there was no hotels. I looked like a freak with my pack and shorts and thongs (sandles) on and ev...

Three friends and I drove from Belgrade, Serbia to Vishegrad, Sarajevo and Mostar (in Herzegovina). I saw remarkable scars of war but also saw beautiful mountain passes, quaint villages, elegant cities and Mediterranean flavour. This is a country you shouldn't miss if you are in the Balkans. The people are engaging and hospitable and you won't be able to stop eating the cevapceci!

We arrived at the memorial place around noon. Based in Sarajevo we had about a three hour drive to get to Srebrenica. Me and my journalist buddy, Morten, weren't sure if we were going to do a story on the events, but I had made up my mind that I wanted to visit Srebrenica when I was in Bosnia. I've never been so tense about seeing something before in my life. Exited yet, anxious. Would it be dangerous for us to be there? I didn't think so. The sun was burning and there was no wind at all...

I spent 8 months in Bosnia on a research fellowship for graduate school. It was a great experience and I got to travel around the region quite a bit. I'd highly recommend the Balkans if you are looking for adventure, hospitality, great food. It is also gentle on your wallet. Enjoy the photos.

We spent 2 days in Split Croatia, which is right on the coast and a big jumping off spot for people who plan to tour the islands of Croatia. I have done island hopping before and it wasnt something I found super exciting, so we decided before the trip that we would head inland to Bosnia and Heryegovina instead. This turned out to be one of the best decisions ever.
Split was nice, but small, we spent one day at a local beach enjoying the crystal blue waters, that we somehow manage...

Reason why we go to Banja Luka
is to meet our friend.
Of course, we take bus...it takes about 6 hours from Belgrade to Banja Luka,
it depends, sometimes more sometimes less.
Banjaluka is center of the Republic
Srpska spreads over both banks of Vrbas river, one of the most beautiful and
greener mountain rivers.
It is small town. People there are friendly. There was book festival when we
arrived, so we take a walk trough park where the festival was established. i
found a few inte...
