After the 1995 Dayton Peace treaty, Bosnia was divided into three regions; the Croat-Muslim Federation, the Republika Srpska and the Brcko District, which is currently held in condominium by the RS and the Federation. As a tourist, you should be careful to not deviate too much off the beaten path, as land mines and unexploded ordinances dot beautiful mountain sides, valleys, and fields.
Sarajevo, Mostar, and Banja Luka are the major cities, although for an enriching travel experience one should stop in the smaller cities and villages. Exploit any opportunity to visit the local bakeries or restaurants as Bosnia has some of the best food and drink in the Balkans. Do not leave without trying burek, cevapi, corba, rakija (a strong alcoholic drink), tufahija, or roasted lamb.
Because of the rich, yet tumultuous history of BiH, one should acquire a working knowledge of the country's history before traveling. While citizens tend to be open (often opinionated) about the past conflict, they appreciate an unbiased understanding of the events that tore apart Yugoslavia. Locals also tend to like it when you try to speak some of their language -- a dialect of Serbo-Croatian depending on where you are and to whom you are speaking.
Must see places include Sarajevo, especially from the hills surrounding the city; The famous Stari Most in Mostar; The glowing Neretva river; The Arizona Market; Tito's Bunker (if you can find it!).
