Bora Bora Travel Guide

Bora Bora is an atoll (volcanically created island surrounded by a lagoon, and protected from the ocean by an encircling coral reef). It is located in the South Pacific Ocean in the Society Islands of French Polynesia. The Society Islands are comprised of Bora Bora, Moorea, Raiatea, Taha's & Tahiti. It is an approximate 8 hour plane ride to Tahiti (Papeete) airport, and then approximately another hour by inter-island plane to Bora Bora.

Vaitape is the main town on Bora Bora. Prices for almost everything (accommodations, food, drink, etc.) are very high, as nearly all products must be shipped in across thousands of miles of open ocean.

Bora Bora was a US military base during World War II, and the large, weathered guns can still be seen on the island, however the island didn't see direct combat during that conflict.
