Paradise...at a high price. Oct 01, 2004
Yes...This IS paradise. You know all those calendars and photos of dreamy tropical islands with electric-blue waters, overwater bungalows & palm trees? Yeah, this is THAT place.
There is a short shuttle-boat ride that leaves/arrives from the airport every hour to the resort's private motu (little, lagoon island). This hotel is not located right on the main island of Bora Bora. It's on it's own private island in Bora Bora's lagoon.
There is an actual hotel, beach bungalows and of course, overwater bungalows. Fortunately, I stayed in a premium overwater bungalow. It was about a 10 minute walk along an overwater, wooden boardwalk to the actual bungalow. Wow!
It had marvelous, unobstructed views of Mt. Otemanu and also right out across the lagoon toward the coral reef of the atoll. It feels like a million miles away from the "real world" here. So quiet, so peaceful, so exotic.
The bungalow itself was very large & plush. Everything was made to a high standard; lots of wood, local crafted decor and good quality. The bedroom was large with a/c. Huge bathroom with massive tub and separate shower area. Very comfy king bed. Wooden blinds and shutters. Robes, slippers and all the fixin's that you'd expect from a 5* resort in French Polynesia. Large, sliding, double doors open up onto a good sized, wooden sun deck. There are steps down to a lower deck, where there was an outdoor shower and a ladder right down into the inviting water.
The snorkeling right at the resort is also very good, given the warm, calm, clear water. The snorkel gear is free to use for guests. Bora Bora is an atoll, so all the wild ocean waves are blocked by the surrounding coral reefs. We also saw lots of stingrays from the boardwalk, particularly around dusk and after dark. There is a sliding, glasstop table that you can look down into the water from in the bungalow, and because the top slides open, one can drop plantain pieces or breadcrumbs down to all the hungry fishies that hang out in the shade underneath.
There were no bugs/mosquitos in the bungalow, as it sits a fair distance out from the shore.
The water was unbelievably clear and warm, and only about 4 feet deep right off the bungalow. Sandy/coral bottom to walk for a few hundred metres out. (Have I said, "wow" in this paragraph yet?) One can also rent paddle boats, play mini-putt and there's also a tennis court on the property.
The service was very discreet but efficient. The restaurant was large and the food was OK...but nothing outstanding, IMO. Try the local speciality of "poisson cru". It's a cold fish dish.
A regular boat shuttle leaves from the resort at regular times to the main island, where there are restaurants, shops, services and the town of Vaitape.
OK, so here's the only cold, very relevant reality: The Bora Bora Pearl Beach is VERY expensive. Our overwater bungalow cost around $600CDN/night, NOT including food or drinks. Food is very expensive at the resort and mixed drinks cost about $15CDN each. The local beer, Hinano, is pretty tasty, but not much cheaper at around $10CDN each at the resort. Take the boat to Vaitape to stock up on snacks at the grocery store, or have breakfast or lunch at a French-style cafe in the main part of town. It's much cheaper than food at the resort.
What more can I say? If you have the opportunity to spend some time here, do it! It is really a location of a lifetime. Perfect for a romantic escape or honeymoon.
