Pretty, Moderately Easy Hike in Big Bend National Park May 26, 2017
The hike to Boquillas Canyon is 1.3 miles and is hike out and return. The trail is unpaved and has a number of steps with uncertain footing at some points along the way. The view is very nice, as the trail winds through rocky hills and follows along the Rio Grande. There are sometimes spots along the way where you see handicrafts placed there by people across the river who wait for someone to buy something, then ride across the river on horseback and collect their money. This is more common at the Boquillas Canyon Overlook just west of the trail. When you reach the canyon itself, you can see ancient holes in the rocks used by prehistoric Indians who lived in the area some 10,500 years ago. Make sure you bring some water, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellant, and of course your camera along. Try to hike early in the morning or in the early evening if visiting in the summer. Hiking in the heat of the day when it is 105 like I did is not the best way.
