Bootham Bar (West Gate) Oct 19, 2017
There has been a gateway here for nearly 2,000 years, Bootham Bar (the old West Gate) and is on the site of one of the four main entrances to the original Roman fortress. Although the current structure is not Roman it dates from the 11th to the 14th century. In 1501 a door knocker was installed as Scots were required to knock first and seek permission from the Lord Mayor to enter the city. The bar was damaged during the siege of York in 1644 and was also used to display the decapitated heads of traitors.

The nearest Car Park (Bootham Row) is a five minute walk away (YO30 7BP) and has 100 spaces.
