The House Of The Book Feb 08, 2017
Looks like a another historical building in great City and that it was but today have a different function. You can notice high up on top of building decoration some kind of monument - man hold a world/globe (that is how it looks to me). I found out that it is a former Singer Manufacturing Factory (and monument on top is their sign) and that globe lighting which I dint see in person.

Dom knigi is the famous bookstore and one of the centers of cultural and intellectual life of the city. It is a historical building in richly decorated Art Nouveau style. Architectural masterpiece was represent of nostalgia of the owner Singer company and vision of architect Pavel Syuzor. It is interesting that this is first building in City witch contain metal frame and glass-roofed atrium. Also, decorations on the building were executed in wrought bronze. The sculptures on the building was vision by the Estonian sculpture Amandus Heinrich Adamson.

The building and location have a turbulent and interesting history. Dom Knigi, the main state bookseller, was opened in the building in 1938. And company work even during the siege of city but brifly closed in 1941 due to lacking electricity and heating. The building was closed in 1948 and open 2006 after the fully restauration of its interior that last two years.

Today building have two floors with lifts, heating and air-conditioning and a specific automatic system for clearing snow from the roof. It offers more then 100 000 books in different fields, exclusive and second hand books mostly on Russian language. Here you can find also and huge selection of various souvenirs and handicrafts, toys. Another novelty shop - electronics department: smart phones, readers, tablets, accessories and more. Information service are very helpful and it is located in all halls store started with the central hall on the 1st floor.

Payment is made in cash, by bank transfer, and gift certificates. In the store you can buy certificates of 500, 1,000 and 2,000 rubles. It offers online reservations and is open from 9:00 to 18:00. Service "Quick Order" is active from 9:00 to 19:00. Online shopping is with 10% discount.

Antiquarian department is open daily from 10 pm till 10 am.

Cafe "Singer" located on the second floor of the store and besides Russian and European cuisine you can enjoy in great view over Nevsky prospect. There is no permit smoking inside and no available WiFi. But you can find a various discounts from 10-25%. And specific offers that I dint use is to get a photo shooting inside of building.

What to buy: My reason for visiting this building is a curiosity and to find a nice postcard (or some book) as memento to remember this trip.

A wide range of stationery, postcards, posters, calendars, maps and atlases. In cafe "Singer" is offer wide selection of hot drinks, fresh pastries and desserts brand.

What to pay: In cafe average 750 ruble. Postcard is very cheap, books varies prices.

Directions: In famous Nevsky prospect, at the corner of Griboedov Canal. It is opposite of Kazan Cathedral. Closed metro is Nevsky Prospekt / Gostiny Dvor.
