I come here often when I'm in Santa Cruz. It's a great place to relax and read without worrying about someone kicking you out for staying too long. They have an eclectic selection of books, and I like browsing through and reading the personalized staff recommendations on the shelves.

It's also very centrally located in downtown Santa Cruz, so it's a perfect place to stop as you're walking through the downtown area.

Definitely a Santa Cruz icon.

Independent bookstores, sadly, are not something you see much anymore. All the ones in my local area were driven out of business by the Big Chains. I miss such places where the staff is knowledgeable about books and one can browse the staff recommendation shelf.

Independent, Local Gem of a Bookstore! Jun 29, 2011
If you find yourself downtown Santa Cruz (after eating a cookie & ice cream from Pacific Cookie Company!) you should stop by this great bookstore.

They have a great ambiance...if you want to pick up a book and sit in the corner to read, or maybe people watch. SC is great for that; the locals never disappoint!

I also love their staff recommendations, which you can find throughout the store.

I remember back when Borders was built down the street. There was a lot of protesting and so many people thought it would be the end of this local shop. But, Borders SC is now out of business and Bookshop Santa Cruz is going strong!

They have author and book club events (which I've never been to) and lots of reading/writing contests.

If you want a truly local experience, make sure it check it out and stay for awhile!

I think a lot of it has to do with the surrounding area. Santa Cruz is very big on buying local and against large chains...There was also a huge protest when a Gap store was put in a while back. The attitude of the people who live here is what saved Bookshop Santa Cruz. It seemed like the only people in Borders were tourists because that is familiar to them...little did they know what was just down the street!

So, what is the secret of their success in your estimation, even considering the previous competition from a big chain down the street?
