From Bondi to the less famous beaches Feb 09, 2013
Get to Bondi beach a variety of different ways. We got the bus from outside the Museum train station all the way to the beach. The bus costs $3.80 one way. Alternately, you can get the train to Bondi Junction train station and either walk or get the bus from there.

From the southern end of Bondi Beach begin the coastal walk along the wooden walkway. The walkway runs all the way along the (approx) 9km of path over the clifftops. The walk took us about 2.5 hours, but in saying that we took our time, making many stops and taking photos. We were in no rush. I'm sure it can be done in 1.5 hours.

It starts at Bondi Beach's southern end, leading onto Tamarama Beach, then Bronte Beach (which is not named after the literary trio of British sisters but Lord Nelson who was the Duke of Bronte), followed by Clovelly Beach, Gordon's Bay and finally, Coogee Beach.

I thought that once you've seen one beach you've seen them all... I was mistaken! The views are spectacular. These series of beaches are some of the most wonderful i've seen, mostly due to the towering cliffs that protect them and the harsh waves that batter them and create picturesque foamy waves that surfers chase on the boards. Not to mention the imposing and vast Waverley Cemetery that balances at the edge of one of the cliffs. It's no Pere Lachaise but it appears grander due to it's surroundings and it makes for a gorgeous photo. If i had to be buried i wouldn't mind being buried overlooking the ever-changing sky and distant horizon!

All along the walkway are information plaques explaining about each beach, it's history and name. Supposedly in 1938, a date forever ingrained in Bondi lore as 'Black Sunday' five beach-goers drowned on Bondi Beach. However, 250 were saved as a series of massively destructive and unexpected waves struck the beach. The word Coogee also means 'smelly place' in Aboriginal language! You decide!

It's a spectacular walk for a spectacular day in Sydney.
